Lime Kiln

Natural England, West Dorset

The original specification was to preserve the lime kiln in its current condition, i.e. not to allow further deterioration. This was achieved by careful excavation of the core or ‘drum’, and installation of two brick piers to support the aperture. Further meetings with Natural England, the landowners and a structural engineer secured additional funding to completely reinstate the limekiln.

Scope of Works

  • Survey and examination of existing structure
  • Removal of the existing drum infill, excavate and repair of brick drum
  • Make safe existing rubble opening
  • Reconstruct quoins in limecrete to form face of kiln. N.B. Limecrete is essential to preserve the maximum amount of existing fabric
  • Consolidate surrounding rubble walling
